Bruce I. Rankin was a prominent Canadian diplomat who was regarded for his vision and outspoken manner. Throughout his 36-year career, Rankin held many distinguished posts, including ambassador to Venezuela and the Dominican Republic from 1964 to 1970, consul general in New York City from 1970 to 1976, and ambassador to Japan from 1976 to 1981. It was during this final appointment that he acquired his collection of Japanese art.
