Note:
Yuan Shikai (1859-1916) was a politician and general whose role was essential in bringing down the Qing Dynasty. Elected the first President of the Republic of China in 1912, he declared himself the ‘Great Emperor of China’ in 1915. However, his reign was short-lived when he died of kidney failure in 1916.
