Lot Report

Provenance:

Private Collection, Quebec

Note:

Working primarily in etchings and watercolours, Robert Savoie’s artworks are animated by Japanese themes. Do-maru takes its title from the chest armour worn by the Samurai class. This type of armour was meticulously constructed from small scales of lacquered leather or metal interwoven into plates with cord. The printing plate from which this work was created, seems etched in respect to this complex process: Its image a magnification of a single scale.

In contrast to the solid appearance of Do-maru, Mouvement is a jostling bundle of forms. Atop a palette of copper and green, its ridges create a strange typography. A typography which mimics the appearance of a slide under microscope lens.
