Provenance:

Private Collection, Toronto

Note:

Born in Budapest, Charles-Ernest de Belle studied in Paris and lived in London prior to his arrival in Montreal. Best known for portraits of children and winter landscapes, de Belle developed his own method of fixative for the artwork he executed in pastel and chalks. His ethereal compositions seem to float atop a backdrop of meringue. Here we see a young woman poised in anticipation. We question what or whom she is waiting for: her ghost-like figure, downy and warm, and her sense of longing encapsulated between glass.
