Adrien Dauzats (1804-1868)
Additional Images
Provenance:
Ex. Coll. of Dr. George Viau;
Private Collection, Ontario
Note:
The subtle daylight atmosphere and tonal unity of this work is emblematic of the architectural works characteristic of the artist. Here, Dauzats has taken liberty with the conventions of a vanishing point. In this work, the observer is presented with an impossible view of the structure; we are given a slightly elevated look into the corridor as well as its rib-vaulted ceilings to convey a sense of the enormity and grandeur of the imposing interior.
George Viau (1855-1939) was born in Paris. The son of a dentist of the Russian Imperial court, Viau was a great patron of the arts. He was personal friends to most of the artists from whom he purchased artworks. In 1942, at the Paris Hôtel Drouot, works from his collection were sold with Auctioneers Mr. Alph Bellier, Mr. Etienne Ader and Mr. D.H. Baudouin. There was a catalogue published for said.
