Provenance:

Collection of Major General W.H.P. Elkins, Kingston, the artist’s cousin;
Acquired by the present Private Collection, Kingston from the Estate of W.H.P. Elkins, Kingston in the late 1960’s

Note:

W.H.P. Elkins (1883-1964) was the Commandant of the Royal Military College in Kingston from 1930-1935.
Ms. Carl was the first Westerner allowed in to the forbidden city of China to paint the Empress Dowager where she lived for 9 months. Before this, Chinese rulers were only painted after their death. Carl was given this honour because she was related to a U.S. diplomat. The painting of the Empress is in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington.
