A label on the reverse of this artwork explains, “Here the Hurons are seen bringing their basic trade of corn and vegetables to Algonkian country in exchange for furs.

The location is at Old Women’s Bay near Wawa, Ontario.

Specific items of trade were corn in kernels, corn ground in skin bundles, baskets, hemp nets, wampum, copper, dried fish, pigment, shells, bone beads, and tobacco leaves in tight bundles bound with bark.”
