Note:
A label on the reverse of this artwork explains, “This panoramic scene represents in a compacted period of time the various elements of the Death Feast ceremony, held once every ten to twelve years. The location is near Orr Lake, Ontario, indicated in the background. Near a village, in a huge burial hole lined with hides and surrounded by a platform erected for the occasion, the bodies of the dead of the previous decade are brought in bags and re-buried. With the bodies, first hung on the platform, are buried gifts and possessions, seen hung on poles among the feasting and dancing relatives. At the conclusion of the festival the bones are re-buried in the common grave. The platform is dismantled and used as a protective covering for the grave. Games are played and contests held and many gifts exchanged.
