Lot Report

Literature:

Ian M. Thom, The Prints of Clarence Gagnon, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Victoria, 1981, page 12, fig.10, illustrated.

Note:

Published in an edition of 50.

This work is the first print by Gagnon to be concerned with stormy weather, something we see repeated in the windmill prints. Thom writes that , in this etching, Gagnon demonstrates his ability to evoke a sense of atmosphere. While giving us a strong sense of the forces of nature “...Gagnon is nevertheless keenly aware of balance in his composition, the black foreground haystack being matched by the expanse of white sky.”
