CONDITION DETAILS

The painting is in good condition, the sheet was laid down onto canvas, some time ago probably done by the Laing Gallery. Laing provenance is very good, they were one of the most prestigious and well-known old galleries in Toronto that operated in the mid 20th Century until Mr. Laing's death. Laing label is on the reverse.

There is a tiny pin-head size circular area of paint loss in the lower centre of the painting in the ground beneath the figure's hands, near this small loss and to the left are two tiny circular areas where the varnish is crazed, otherwise all is ok
under uv, it appears that the painting was cleaned at the time Laing had the painting, down the centre, there is a broken, vertical line of light over painting, that runs from the top of the canvas down to the bottom of the canvas. This could have been a crease in the paper or tear that was restored by Laing and that is likely the reason for the work to be laid down on canvas
