Joan Murray, Daffodils in Winter, The Life and Letters of Pegi Nicol MacLeod, 1904-1949, Moonbeam, 1984, plate 33, for a similar watercolour and page 29 for a discussion of this theme.

Note:

Painted circa 1912.

Murray writes: “Looking down from the window of her studio on the colourful public school garden opposite her home in Ottawa that summer, she became fascinated with the individual plots where children weeded and planted. ‘That garden and the children working in it inspired most of my early work’. She continued to paint the garden for many years.”
