John Maclure, “Hidden Treasures of a Shy Rebel”, Maclean’s, Canada’s National Magazine, Volume 78, Number 21, November 1, 1965, page 26, reproduced in colour.
Note:
The shy rebel referred to in the Maclean’s article was J.E.H. MacDonald and the caption accompanying the illustration of this work stated that it was painted at Dr. James McCallum’s island near Go Home Bay on Georgian Bay ”...On a day too stormy for outdoor work, MacDonald arranged these few leaves and flowers, with a towel for background.”
It is interesting to note that the year 1916 was pivotal for MacDonald’s career and for Canadian Art. He completed three major canvases including The Tangled Garden, The Elements and Rock and Maple that year. Furthermore, the floral, maple leaf and apple motifs appear in a number of works painted by MacDonald during this period.
A copy of the Maclean’s magazine article can be made available to the purchaser of this lot.
