Lot Report

Provenance:

The Fine Art Galleries, The T. Eaton Co. Limited
Mr. & Mrs. Gordon McBurney, Brantford
Private Collection, Toronto

Literature:

Roger Burford Mason, A Grand Eye for Glory, A Life of Franz Johnston, Toronto, 1998, pages 68-70.

Note:

Following his association with the Group of Seven, Johnston made regular trips to the Canadian North during the 1930s where, as Mason writes, “he was determined to paint a purer and purer vision of Canada’s elemental grandeur.” Writing in the Toronto Star of December 9, 1936, critic Augustus Bridle commented on Johnston’s works as a “panorama of northland scenes in even more than his usual ecstasy of luminous heroic painting...marvelous clarity, rhythm, luminosity...a revelation of a new north”.
