Literature:

Roger Boulet, Frederic Marlett Bell-Smith, Victoria, 1977, page 19.

Note:

Boulet quotes the artist on first reaching the Rockies: “I first saw the mountains in July, 1887, and the first impression lives with me to-day. I had arrived at Banff in cloudy weather with no mountains visible, but while sketching a bit of the Bow River the clouds lifted, and Cascade Mountain with its crags and gullies white with fresh snow appeared as I have never again seen it, and my sketch provoked the remark from L.R. O’Brien, president of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, that it was the first time that he had seen ‘Cascade’ look interesting.”
