ALEXANDER YOUNG JACKSON, O.S.A., R.C.A.
Provenance:
Roberts Gallery, Toronto.
Private Collection, Toronto.
Literature:
A.Y. Jackson, A Painter’s Country, Toronto, 1958, page 66.
Note:
A native of Montreal, Jackson was compelled to explore his province, trekking frequently along the shores of the St. Lawrence. Jackson recalled: “I do not know how many Quebec canvases I have painted. I have worked in villages on both the north and south shores of the St. Lawrence…I have happy memories of a great many places from St. Joachim to Tadoussac…from Levis to Fox River in Gaspe.” “Gaspe near Mont Joli” depicts the seasonal change from winter to spring; a visual array contrasting the movement of wind visible in the sky and trees with the stillness of the bare branches and mountain peaks.
