Lot 135 Details
English Pewter Engraved Plate, William Cook, Bristol, c.1800
with maker’s ‘hallmarks’ crowned ‘X’, and London label* and monogram II, the well with decorative engraving of a gentleman on horssback in a landscape setting.
Estimate $100-$150
Note:
*The ‘Made in London’ label was sometimes used by provincial makers, not to deceive, but to indicate their wares were of the same quality as any London maker’s. Cook is recorded as having worked in Bristol between 1795 and 1812. The curved bottom and polished, unused condition of this plate indicate that the it was always intended to serve as a decoration and that the engraved picture is likely contemporary with the manufacture.
